About the Fox Spirit and the Northern Lights

In Finnish folklore, the Northern Lights are called revontulet. It comes from the word repo, meaning fox, and tuli, meaning fire. Revontulet literally translates into the Fox’s Fires.

The old stories tell of a magical Fox, playfully running through the snowy lands at night. As its tail brushes against the hills and treetops, sparks rise up into the sky, igniting the dancing lights above; the Northern Lights; the Fox’s Fire.

The Fox is a liminal spirit in northern myth; clever, watchful, and quietly powerful, moving between worlds, between forest and sky, earth and flame. This rectangular pendant, made from Finnish birch burl, is inspired by this quiet winter tale of the Northern Lights. It carries the fox as a creator of the Northern Lights, and as a guardian of twilight: a reminder of quiet strength, hidden wisdom, and the fire that glows even in the darkest night.
